A place I remember: a family interview map activity for grades 3–5
What it is: a thread and an at-home activity for grades 3–5. Students interview a family member or another trusted adult about a place they remember, then locate it on a map and make a "memory postcard." It connects map skills with real stories, and it works whether the place is across town or across the world.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 3rd to 5th grade.
Materials: the 5 interview questions below, a world or U.S. map, index cards or paper cut to postcard size, and colored pencils.
- Share a place you remember and model the questions: What was the land like (hills, flat, water)? What was the weather like? What did people do there for work or fun? What sounds or smells do you remember? Why is it special to you?
- Students choose an adult to interview at home or at school. The adult chooses the place.
- Students write short notes for each answer. No addresses or private details are needed: a town, region or country is enough.
- In class, students find the place on a map and mark it with a pin or sticky dot.
- On the postcard, students draw the place on one side and write 3 geography facts from the interview on the other.
- Look at the class map together: how many continents, states or types of land did the stories reach?
Safety: let families decide what to share. Some families moved for hard reasons, so the adult may pick any place they enjoy talking about, including a place they visited.
Differentiation: students who need support ask 3 questions and draw the postcard. Students who are ready compare the place with where they live now in a short Venn diagram. English learners can interview in their home language and report in English.
Quick check: ask a student to point to the place on the map and share one fact about its land or weather.
Join the conversation: How do you connect family stories to map skills without asking for private details? Share your favorite interview question.
