Main idea table: a 30-minute 3rd grade nonfiction reading activity
What it is: a 3rd grade nonfiction reading activity where the main idea is a tabletop and the supporting details are its legs. If a "detail" does not hold up the main idea, the table wobbles. Students learn to tell the main idea from interesting facts.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade.
Materials: a short nonfiction article (one page, 3 or 4 paragraphs), a table organizer (a tabletop box and 4 leg boxes), and sticky notes.
- Draw a table on the board. Read a paragraph aloud and ask: "What is it mostly about?" Write it on the tabletop.
- Ask: "Which sentences hold it up?" Write 3 details on the legs.
- Add one fun fact that doesn't support the main idea and ask: "Does this hold up the table?"
- Pairs read the article and fill their own table, one leg per detail.
- Pairs swap tables and check: does each leg hold up the top?
Differentiation: students who need support get the main idea and find the legs. Students who are ready write a one-sentence summary from the table. English learners can use a version of the article with key words in bold.
Quick check: read a new paragraph and ask a student for the main idea and one detail that supports it.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
