Should students sell online? A paper storefront activity and thread

Paper online storefront (Grades 6–8): Write the listing, set price and shipping, privacy check

Middle school students often ask about selling online. This grades 6–8 activity lets them practice the business skills of an online shop on paper only: a product title, a clear description, a price, shipping cost and delivery time. A final privacy check shows why an adult runs any real online account. The Federal Trade Commission's COPPA rule protects the personal information of users under 13 online.

Time: about 35 minutes. Grade: 6th to 8th grade.

Materials: a paper listing template (product drawing, title, description, price, shipping, delivery time, return policy), pencils, colored pencils, a privacy checklist on the board.

  1. Ask: "What do you look at before you buy something online?" List answers: photo, price, reviews, shipping, return policy.
  2. Students choose a product they could make (a bookmark set, a painted rock, a knitted hat) and draw it for the listing.
  3. Students write a title under 60 characters that a shopper would search for, then a three-sentence honest description.
  4. Students set a price, a shipping cost and a delivery time, and check that the total feels fair.
  5. Run the privacy check together: no full names, home address, school, phone number, birthday or face photos. Discuss why a parent or guardian creates and runs any real account.
  6. Gallery walk: students leave a sticky note on two listings saying whether they would buy and why.

Safety: this is a paper activity. Students do not create real seller accounts or post anything online. Any real online selling is run by a parent or guardian.

Differentiation: students who need support use a listing with the title and price filled in. Students who are ready compare free shipping with a higher price against a lower price plus shipping.

How do you answer when students ask about selling online? Has a family in your group handled it in a way that worked? Share your approach in the replies.
