What is in soil? A 25-minute soil sifting activity for K–2
What it is: a K–2 activity where small groups sift a cup of garden soil through a colander and a screen, then sort what they find: tiny rocks, sand, bits of leaves and roots, and sometimes a worm. Students learn that soil is a mix of broken-down rock, rotting plant and animal matter, water and air.
Time: about 25 minutes. Grade: K–2.
Materials: a cup of garden soil per group (not bagged potting mix), a kitchen colander, a piece of window screen or a fine sieve, three white paper plates, plastic spoons, craft sticks, hand lenses, gloves and a spray bottle of water.
- Show a cup of soil. Ask: "What do you think is in here?" Write the predictions.
- Groups pour the soil through the colander onto a plate and pick out the big pieces with craft sticks: pebbles, twigs, leaves.
- Sift what is left through the screen onto a second plate. Look at the fine part with hand lenses: sand grains, dark crumbs, tiny roots.
- On the third plate, sort into piles: bits of rock, bits of plants, and "not sure".
- If you find a worm or insect, look closely, then return it gently to the place the soil came from.
- Mist a pinch of the fine soil and rub it between gloved fingers. Ask: "Is it gritty, smooth or sticky?"
- Students draw their plate, label one thing that came from rock and one from plants, and compare with the predictions.
Safety: use soil from a garden bed you know has not been treated with chemicals, have students wear gloves and keep hands away from faces, and wash hands with soap afterward.
Differentiation: students who need support sort into two piles only (rock and plant) with a picture key. Students who are ready compare soil from two places, such as a garden bed and under a tree. English learners can label the piles in English and in their home language.
Quick check: ask a student to name two things soil is made of and point to one of each on their plate.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
