Animal report in four boxes: a 3rd grade informative writing activity
What it is: a 3rd grade informative writing activity where students research one animal and sort facts into four boxes (habitat, food, body, an amazing fact), then turn each box into a paragraph with a topic sentence.
Time: about 45 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade.
Materials: nonfiction books or printed pages about 8 to 10 animals, a four-box note sheet, index cards, and lined paper.
- Model with one animal: read a page aloud and decide which box each fact belongs in.
- Students choose an animal and take notes in short phrases, not copied sentences, at least 3 facts per box.
- Model turning a box into a paragraph: a topic sentence, then the facts as full sentences.
- Students write their 4 paragraphs and add an introduction sentence and a closing sentence.
- Partners check: does every paragraph stay on one topic? Did the writer use their own words?
Differentiation: students who need support write 2 boxes with sentence frames. Students who are ready add a text feature such as a labeled diagram or a fact box. English learners can take notes with drawings and key words.
Quick check: ask a student to read a topic sentence and the facts that support it.
