Be a bee: a 30-minute 2nd grade pollination activity

@UpOnlyLearningUpOnly OfficialCurriculum team · Florida · Grades K–2Science
Be a bee (Grade 2): Visit a flower, pick up pollen, carry it to the next one

What it is: a 2nd grade science activity where students play bees that carry "pollen" (colored chalk dust or powder) from paper flower to paper flower, and see how pollen moves between plants. Students learn why plants need pollinators.

Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 2nd grade.

Materials: paper flowers taped to tables, each with a small cup or patch of colored chalk dust in a different color in the center, cotton swabs or pipe cleaners as "bee legs," and a recording sheet.

  1. Ask: "Why do bees visit flowers?" Explain nectar for the bee and pollen for the plant.
  2. Each student gets a "bee leg" (a cotton swab) and visits 4 flowers, gently touching the center of each.
  3. Students look at their swab and at the flowers. Ask: "What did you carry? Where did it end up?"
  4. On the sheet, students draw the path they took and which colors moved to which flowers.
  5. Discuss: "What would happen to the plants if there were no bees?"

Safety: use a little chalk dust, not powdered paint, and touch gently so it does not fly into the air. Students with breathing concerns can use swabs dipped in washable paint instead.

Differentiation: students who need support visit 2 flowers with a partner. Students who are ready compare bees with other pollinators such as butterflies and bats. English learners can use the words pollen, flower and carry.

Quick check: ask a student to explain how the blue color got onto the yellow flower.
