Bird's-eye map of our classroom: a 30-minute map skills activity, K–2

Bird's-eye view map skills activity for K–2: look down at a cup, build the classroom with blocks, draw a map key, find the hidden X

What it is: students learn what a bird's-eye view is, build a model of the classroom on the floor with blocks, then turn it into a class map with a key and use it to find a hidden object. It is a hands-on map skills activity for kindergarten to 2nd grade.

Time: about 30 minutes.

Materials: a cup; building blocks or small boxes; painter's tape; chart paper or a whiteboard; markers; one small object to hide. No blocks? Use sticky notes on the floor as furniture.

  1. Hold a cup at eye level and ask: "What shape do you see?" (a rectangle, from the side). Then hold it below their eyes and let them look straight down: "Now what shape?" (a circle). Say: "Looking straight down is a bird's-eye view. Maps show places from a bird's-eye view."
  2. Tape a big rectangle on the floor for the classroom walls. Ask: "Where is the door? The rug? My desk?" Students place blocks for each one inside the tape.
  3. Stand on a chair yourself, or have students stand around the edge, and look down at the model. Ask: "Does it match our room? What is missing?" Fix it together.
  4. Copy the model onto chart paper as a class. Draw shapes only, from above: rectangles for tables, a circle for the rug.
  5. Make a map key: a small symbol for each thing, such as a square for desks and a star for the reading corner. Ask: "Why does a map need a key?"
  6. Play hide and find: while students cover their eyes, hide the object and mark an X on the map. A student uses the map to find it. Finders hide the next one.
  7. Add position words as you play: next to, between, near, far, in front of, behind. "The X is between the sink and the window."

Extension: make a bird's-eye map of the playground next.

Differentiation: for kindergarten, keep the key to three symbols and give hints with position words. For 2nd grade, have pairs draw their own small map on scrap paper and add a compass rose with north marked by a sign on the classroom wall. For English learners, label real furniture with sticky notes that match the key. For students who use wheelchairs or find the floor hard, build the model on a table instead.

Quick check: point to a symbol on the map and ask a student to walk to that spot in the room and name what is there.

If you try it, share where your class hid the object that was hardest to find.
