Is it money? A Pre-K sorting game about what money is
What it is: a Pre-K social studies game where students look at everyday objects and decide whether each one is money that people can use to buy things. Buttons, bottle caps and game tokens look a lot like coins, so the game helps students notice that money is something stores accept, not just anything round and shiny.
Time: about 15 minutes. Grade: Pre-K (ages 4 to 5).
Materials: two hoops or paper plates (one with a coin picture, one with an X), a few play or real coins, a play dollar bill, a pretend card cut from cardboard, and look-alikes: large buttons, bottle caps, game tokens, a leaf and a toy block.
- Tell a short story: "Bear wants to buy a banana at the store. What can Bear give the store worker?"
- Hold up one object at a time. Ask: "Will the store take this for a banana?"
- A student places the object in the money hoop or the not-money hoop. The class shows thumbs up or thumbs down.
- Talk about the tricky ones: "The button is round like a coin. Can Bear buy a banana with it? Why not?"
- Sum up together: people use money to buy things, and they get money by working.
- Act it out: one student is the store worker and takes only money for a pretend banana.
Safety: use objects bigger than a student's fist, or keep small items in the adult's hand. Buttons, bottle caps and coins are choking hazards.
Differentiation: students who need support sort only three objects: a coin, a bill and a leaf. Students who are ready explain one tricky item in a full sentence. English learners can use the words money, buy and store.
Quick check: show a coin and a bottle cap. Ask a student which one Bear can use to buy a banana.
