Character traits with evidence: a 30-minute 3rd grade reading activity
What it is: a 3rd grade reading activity where students choose a trait word for a character (brave, selfish, patient) and back it up with evidence from the text: something the character said, did or thought. Students learn that traits are inside qualities, not looks.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade.
Materials: a chapter book or picture book the class knows, a trait word bank, and a 3-column organizer: trait, evidence, page.
- Ask: "Is tall a trait? Is kind?" Sort a few words into outside (looks) and inside (traits).
- Model one trait for a character with a quote and the page number.
- Pairs choose two traits for a character and find evidence for each in the book.
- Pairs share one trait and read the evidence aloud. The class gives a thumbs up if the evidence fits.
- Ask: "Did the character change during the story? Which trait changed?"
Differentiation: students who need support choose from 4 trait words with pictures. Students who are ready find a trait that changes and show evidence from the beginning and end. English learners can use the frame "___ is ___ because on page ___ ..."
Quick check: give a student a trait word for a character and ask for one piece of evidence.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
