Cultural landscape walk (Grades 6–8): Look and tally, sketch the block, what it tells us

What it is: a field observation activity for grades 6–8 based on the idea of a cultural landscape, described by geographer Carl Sauer in 1925: the way people shape a place leaves clues about who lives there and what they value. On a short supervised walk, students tally clues such as languages on signs, building styles, place names, gardens and how land is used.

Time: about 40 minutes. Grade: 6th to 8th grade.

Materials: clipboards, a tally sheet with 6 categories (languages on signs, building styles, place and street names, types of businesses, green spaces, transportation), pencils and a simple base map of the walking route.

  1. Introduce the idea: a cultural landscape is the visible mark people leave on a place.
  2. Walk a short, planned route on school grounds or nearby sidewalks. Students tally what they see in each category.
  3. Students sketch a simple map of one block and label 3 clues.
  4. Back in class, groups compare tallies. Ask: "What do the clues tell us about who lives here, what they do and what they care about?"
  5. Discuss how the landscape changes over time, such as a new store, a mural or an older building used in a new way.
  6. Students write a short paragraph with 3 clues and what each one suggests, using careful words like "may" and "suggests."

Safety: adults supervise the walk, students stay together on sidewalks, do not enter private property, and do not photograph people. Places of worship and homes are observed only from the public sidewalk.

Differentiation: students who need support track 3 categories. Students who are ready compare their block with photos of a block in another country from a reliable source. English learners can tally with pictures.

Quick check: ask a student to name one clue from the walk and what it may tell us about the community.

Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
