Map projection activity: peel an orange to see why maps stretch

Why flat maps stretch (Grades 6–8): Draw on a sphere, peel and flatten, compare projections

What it is: a hands-on activity for grades 6–8 that shows why no flat map can show the round Earth perfectly. Students draw rough continents on an orange, peel it and try to press the peel flat. The tears and stretches they get are the same choices mapmakers face: every projection distorts area, shape, distance or direction in some way.

Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 6th to 8th grade.

Materials: one orange per pair (or a ball you can draw on and cut paper globe pieces from, if there are citrus allergies), ballpoint or washable markers, paper towels, and printouts of a Mercator map and an equal-area map.

  1. Students draw an equator and rough outlines of a few continents on the orange.
  2. They peel the orange carefully by hand in as few pieces as possible and try to lay the peel flat on a paper towel.
  3. Discuss: "What happened to the shapes? Where did it tear?" Connect tears to interrupted maps and stretching to maps like Mercator.
  4. Compare Greenland and Africa on the Mercator map. Then share the fact: Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland. Ask why the Mercator map makes them look similar.
  5. Show the equal-area map and compare the two. Explain that Mercator keeps directions correct, which is why sailors used it.
  6. Students write which projection they would choose for a ship's navigator and which for a map comparing country sizes, and why.

Safety: peel by hand, no knives. Check for citrus allergies first, wash hands after, and offer the ball option to anyone who prefers it.

Differentiation: students who need support compare Greenland and Africa only. Students who are ready research a third projection and its trade-off. English learners can use the words projection, distort, area and shape.

Quick check: ask a student why Greenland looks so large on a Mercator map.

Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
