Population pyramids: read and compare two countries in grades 6–8
What it is: a data activity for grades 6–8 where students build population pyramids with the U.S. Census Bureau's free International Database and compare two countries with very different age structures, such as Japan and Nigeria. Students learn to read age bars and to connect a pyramid's shape to what a country needs, like more schools or more care for older adults.
Time: about 40 minutes. Grade: 6th to 8th grade.
Materials: computers or tablets with the Census Bureau International Database (no account needed), graph paper as a backup, and a 4-question recording sheet.
- Show a sample pyramid. Explain: each bar is an age group; men on one side and women on the other; the bottom bars are the youngest people.
- Students open the International Database and create a pyramid for Japan for the current year, then for Nigeria.
- They sketch both shapes and describe them: wide base, narrow base, bulge in the middle or top.
- Students answer: Which country has a larger share of young people? Which has a larger share of people over 65? Use the bars to support the answer.
- Groups predict: what might each country need more of in 20 years (schools, jobs, health care, housing)?
- Students add the United States and place it between, near or beyond the other two.
Differentiation: students who need support compare only the bottom three bars and the top three bars. Students who are ready look at a pyramid for 20 years in the future in the same tool. English learners can use the words wide, narrow, older, younger and share.
Quick check: show a pyramid with a narrow base and a wide top and ask the student what it says about the country.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
