CVC word ladders: a 15-minute kindergarten phonics game
What it is: a kindergarten phonics game where students change one letter at a time to climb a ladder of short words: cat, hat, hot, hop, mop. Changing one sound at a time trains careful listening and blending.
Time: about 15 minutes. Grade: kindergarten.
Materials: letter cards or magnetic letters per pair (a, e, i, o, u and about 12 consonants), a ladder drawn on paper with 5 rungs, and a pencil.
- Build "cat" together. Tap each letter and blend: "c... a... t, cat."
- Say: "Change cat to hat." Ask which sound changed and which letter to swap.
- Students make the change, read the new word and write it on the next rung.
- Keep climbing: hat, hot, hop, mop. Change the beginning, middle and end sounds.
- Pairs make their own ladder of 3 words for another pair to read.
Differentiation: students who need support change only the first letter. Students who are ready try words with blends, such as top to stop. English learners can use picture cards for each word on the ladder.
Quick check: say "pin" and then "pan". Ask a student which letter changed.
