Robot talk blending game: a 10-minute pre-K phonological awareness activity
What it is: a quick oral game where you say a word in robot voice, broken into parts ("sun... shine" or "c... a... t"), and students blend the parts into the whole word. Blending sounds by ear is a key step before reading.
Time: about 10 minutes. Grade: Pre-K (ages 4 to 5).
Materials: nothing required. A small box can stand in as the robot's "control panel" if you like.
- Explain that the class robot can only talk in pieces. Say "rain... bow" in a flat robot voice.
- Students repeat the parts, then say the whole word in their own voice: "rainbow."
- Do 5 compound words: cup-cake, sun-flower, foot-ball, back-pack, star-fish.
- Move to syllables: "ba... na... na", "ta... ble", "pen... cil".
- When students are ready, try three single sounds in short words: "m... o... p".
- Let a student be the robot and say a word in pieces for the class.
Differentiation: students who need support stay with compound words and get a picture clue. Students who are ready can break a word into parts themselves. English learners can work with words they already know, such as names of classmates.
Quick check: say three robot words to each student during a transition. Note who blends syllables and who blends single sounds.
