Fair share division: a 30-minute 3rd grade math activity
What it is: a 3rd grade math activity where small groups deal out a stack of cards (or counters) so each person gets the same number, then write the division sentence. Students connect dealing out fairly with the meaning of division and see what a remainder is.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade.
Materials: a deck of playing cards or 30 counters per group, sticky notes, and a recording sheet with columns for total, groups, each gets, and left over.
- Hold 12 cards and call 3 students. Deal one card at a time until they're gone. Ask: "How many does each person get?" Write 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
- Explain: division answers "how many in each group" when we share fairly.
- Groups pick a total and a number of people from the sheet, deal the cards out and record the result.
- Try 14 cards for 3 people. Ask: "What happens to the extras?" Introduce the word remainder.
- Each group writes one sharing story problem for another group to solve.
Differentiation: students who need support use totals up to 20 with no remainders. Students who are ready predict before dealing and check with a multiplication fact. English learners can use the frame "___ shared by ___ is ___ each."
Quick check: ask a student how they would share 18 cards among 4 friends and what is left over.
