Receipt detective: a 3rd grade money math activity
What it is: a 3rd grade math activity where students read pretend store receipts, check each line and find the one mistake hidden on each receipt: a wrong total, an item charged twice or the wrong change. It builds the habit of checking a receipt before leaving a store.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade.
Materials: 4 pretend receipts you write (3 or 4 items each, prices in whole dollars, quarters and half dollars, a total, the amount paid and the change), each with one mistake; pencils and a highlighter.
- Show a correct receipt and name the parts: items, prices, total, amount paid, change.
- Model checking: add the prices and compare with the total, then count up from the total to the amount paid to check the change.
- Pairs get receipt A. For example: notebook $3.00, markers $4.25, glue $1.50, total $9.25, paid $10.00, change $0.75. (The real total is $8.75, so the change should be $1.25.)
- Pairs highlight the mistake and write the correct number next to it.
- Rotate through receipts B, C and D: an item charged twice, wrong change, and an item on the receipt that was never bought.
- Ask: "What could you do if this happened at a real store?" (Politely show the receipt to the cashier.)
Differentiation: students who need support use receipts with whole-dollar prices. Students who are ready write a receipt with a hidden mistake for a partner. English learners can use the words total, change and mistake.
Quick check: show a total of $6.50 paid with $10 and change of $4.50. Ask whether the change is right and why.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
