Fitness bingo: a 20-minute PE game for 3rd grade
What it is: a 3rd grade PE game played on a 3 by 3 bingo card where every square is a movement task. Students pick squares, do the task, mark it and try to get three in a row. Because the card mixes strength, heart, balance and stretch squares, students see the different parts of fitness.
Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade (grades 3–5).
Materials: a bingo card and a pencil for each student or pair, and open space. Example squares: 10 squats, 20 seconds of high knees, balance on one foot for 15 seconds on each side, 8 wall push-ups, 10 jumping jacks, a 20-second plank on knees or toes, 5 inchworms, 30 seconds of side steps, 10 calf raises.
- Show the card and point out the 4 kinds of squares: strength, heart, balance and stretch. Color-code them if you can.
- Students choose a square, do the task with good form and mark it.
- Call bingo with three in a row. Then aim for the four corners, then the whole card.
- Halfway through, pause and ask: "Which squares made your heart beat fastest?"
- Students swap cards with a partner and play a second round on the new card.
- Finish with the stretch squares as a cool-down.
Safety: students move at their own pace and rest between squares; wall push-ups face a sturdy wall; balance squares happen near a wall or chair; drink water between rounds. Every session: warm up first, clear the space, keep water nearby, and stop if anything hurts or a student feels dizzy or unwell.
Differentiation: students who need support can do half the reps or a seated version of each square, such as seated marching or seated arm circles. Students who are ready can write their own card with at least two squares of each kind. English learners can use cards with a picture of each move.
Quick check: ask a student to name one strength square and one heart square on the card.
