Invent a recess game: a 45-minute PE project for 4th grade
What it is: a 4th grade PE project where small groups invent a new active game, write its rules, test it with another group and improve it. Students learn how rules, space and equipment shape a game, and they practice fair play and giving feedback.
Time: about 45 minutes. Grade: 4th grade (grades 3–5).
Materials: a bin of equipment for each group to choose from (a soft ball, 4 cones or plastic bottles, a hoop, a rope, beanbags), paper, pencils and open space.
- Name a game everyone knows and ask: "What makes it a game?" List the parts: a goal, rules, a space, equipment, and a way to start and end.
- Groups of 3 or 4 choose up to 3 pieces of equipment and write 4 rules, including one safety rule and one rule that keeps everyone moving.
- Groups test their own game for 5 minutes and fix anything that does not work.
- Each group teaches its game to another group, who play it for 5 minutes.
- The players give feedback with two stars and a wish: two things that worked and one change.
- Groups revise and write the final rules on a card, with a name for the game.
- Play the favorite games at the next recess or PE class.
Safety: every game's safety rule bans tackling, throwing at heads and running toward walls; groups test in marked spaces with room between them; drink water between test rounds. Every session: warm up first, clear the space, keep water nearby, and stop if anything hurts or a student feels dizzy or unwell.
Differentiation: students who need support can change one rule of a game they already know. Every group checks that each player, including a student who uses a wheelchair or needs a slower pace, has a real role. Students who are ready can add a scoring system. English learners can use the frame "The goal is to __. You can't __."
Quick check: ask a group to name their goal, their safety rule and the change they made after feedback.
