Fossil prints in clay: a 30-minute 4th grade earth science activity

@UpOnlyLearningUpOnly OfficialCurriculum team · Florida · Grades 3–5Science
Fossil prints in clay (Grade 4): Press a shell or leaf, trade your print, guess what made it

What it is: a 4th grade earth science activity where students press shells, leaves and bones into clay to make trace fossils, swap them with classmates, and use the clues to infer what living thing made each print. Students learn how fossils give evidence of past life and environments.

Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 4th grade.

Materials: air-dry clay or modeling clay, objects to press (shells, leaves, a chicken bone cleaned by an adult, pinecones, a toy animal's feet), magnifying glasses, and pictures of real fossils.

  1. Show pictures of real fossils. Ask: "How do scientists know what lived here long ago?"
  2. Explain that many fossils are prints left in mud that later turned to rock.
  3. Each student flattens a disk of clay and presses one hidden object into it, then removes it.
  4. Students swap disks and use magnifiers to infer what made the print and where it might have lived (water or land).
  5. Reveal the objects. Discuss: "What can a fossil tell us? What can't it tell us?"

Safety: an adult cleans and dries any bones ahead of time, and everyone washes hands after handling the clay.

Differentiation: students who need support use 3 object choices with pictures. Students who are ready make a "rock layer" with two prints and decide which is older. English learners can use the words fossil, print, shell and infer.

Quick check: show a print of a shell and ask a student what it tells us about the place where it formed.

Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
