Frayer model vocabulary: a 25-minute 5th grade activity
What it is: a 5th grade vocabulary activity using the Frayer model, a four-box chart around a word: definition, characteristics, examples and non-examples. Students understand a word deeply, not just its definition, and the non-examples clear up mix-ups.
Time: about 25 minutes. Grade: 5th grade.
Materials: Frayer model templates, a list of 6 to 8 key words from a current unit (such as ecosystem, democracy, perimeter, adaptation), and dictionaries or the textbook glossary.
- Model one word, such as mammal: definition, traits (hair, breathes air, feeds young milk), examples (dog, whale) and non-examples (shark, penguin). Ask why a whale is a mammal and a shark is not.
- Assign one word per pair. Pairs fill a Frayer model using the glossary and their own knowledge.
- Pairs pass their chart to another pair, who adds one example and one non-example.
- Each pair presents its word in 1 minute.
- Post the charts as a word wall for the unit.
Differentiation: students who need support get the definition filled in and add examples. Students who are ready choose a non-example that is close and explain the difference. English learners can add a drawing and a home-language translation in the center.
Quick check: say a word from the wall and ask a student for one example and one non-example.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
