Free Earth and space fact pages with sources: a 30-minute research station
What it is: a free set of Earth and space science pages for K–8 covering Earth's layers, rocks, volcanoes, weather, the water cycle, the Moon, the planets and space. Each fact is short and cites its source, mostly NASA, NOAA and USGS. No account is needed to read it.
How to use it as a research station for grades 3–8:
Time: about 30 minutes. Materials: one device per pair, the linked page, and a simple "fact card" for each student (an index card or quarter sheet).
- Give each pair one topic from the page, such as volcanoes or the Moon.
- Pairs read the section and choose the two facts they find most interesting.
- On the fact card, students write each fact in their own words, then copy the source name that goes with it. This is a gentle first lesson in citing sources: every fact needs to say where it came from.
- Each pair adds one question their facts raised that the page doesn't answer.
- Pairs share their best fact in 30 seconds. Post the cards on a wall to build a class Earth and space fact board.
- Pick two of the unanswered questions for next week's investigation.
Why it works: students get reliable information with the source attached, so the habit of checking where a fact comes from is built in from the start.
What to change next time: for older students, ask them to open the source link for one fact and find one more detail the summary left out. For younger or struggling readers, read the section aloud and let them draw one fact instead of writing it. Homeschool families can turn this into a weekly "fact of the week" card that a child explains at dinner.
