Gingerbread house STEM challenge: a 45-minute build, grades 3–5

Gingerbread house STEM challenge for grades 3–5: index card house, test strong shapes, snow load on the roof, wind test

What it is: a gingerbread house STEM challenge with no food required. Teams build a "gingerbread" house from index cards and tape that must stand on its own, hold a snow load on the roof and survive a wind test. Students plan, test and improve, and find out why builders rely on triangles and wide bases.

Time: about 45 minutes.

Materials per team of three: 20 index cards (brown paper cut to size works too), 50 cm of tape, scissors, a ruler. For testing: 10 pennies or washers in a small cup for the snow load and a file folder for fanning. Want real gingerbread? Graham crackers and frosting work, but check allergies first (wheat, milk and egg are common) and treat them as building material, not a snack.

  1. Define (5 min): write the criteria on the board. The house stands on its own with walls, a roof and a door opening. Its roof holds the snow load for 10 seconds, and it stays standing after 5 strong fans with a folder from 30 cm away.
  2. Explore (5 min): give each team two spare cards. "Fold one into a triangle tube, a square tube and a zigzag. Which is hardest to squash?" Triangles usually win.
  3. Plan (5 min): teams sketch the house and mark where they will use strong shapes. No building yet.
  4. Build (15 min): set a visible timer. Remind teams the roof has to carry weight.
  5. Test (8 min): wind first, then snow. Record pass or fail for each test and note where any failure started.
  6. Improve and retest (7 min): each team gets 5 more cards and makes one change.

Debrief: "What did the strongest houses have in common?" Expect wide bases, triangle supports under the roof and folded edges. Connect it to real buildings in snowy places, where roofs are built to carry the weight of snow or shed it.

Extension: add pennies one at a time until each roof gives way, and graph the results.

Differentiation: for newer builders, show drawings of three strong shapes before planning and assign roles (builder, tester, recorder). For advanced students, add a budget: each card costs $1 and each 10 cm of tape $2, and the winning house passes both tests for the least money. For English learners, post a word bank: wall, roof, base, triangle, load, stable. For students with fine-motor needs, pre-cut tape strips and let them run the timer and the tests.

Quick check: exit ticket: "Draw the shape that made your house strongest and explain why in one sentence."

If you try it, tell us how many pennies your strongest roof held before it gave way.
