Goods and services sort: a 25-minute 2nd grade economics activity

@UpOnlyLearningUpOnly OfficialCurriculum team · Florida · Grades K–2Social studies
Goods and services sort (Grade 2): Can you touch it?, or is it a job done?, sort and explain

What it is: a 2nd grade economics activity where students sort picture cards into goods (things you can touch and buy) and services (work someone does for you), then find both in their own community.

Time: about 25 minutes. Grade: 2nd grade.

Materials: picture cards (a bike, a haircut, apples, a doctor visit, a toy, a bus ride, shoes, a car wash, a book, a teacher's lesson), two sorting mats, and a town map or list of local businesses.

  1. Hold up an apple and act out sweeping. Ask: "Which one can you hold? Which one is someone doing for you?"
  2. Name them: goods and services. Write a short definition for each.
  3. Pairs sort the cards and choose one card to explain to the class.
  4. Discuss tricky ones: a restaurant sells goods (food) and services (cooking and serving).
  5. Students list 3 goods and 3 services they or their families used this week.

Differentiation: students who need support sort 6 clear cards. Students who are ready think of a business that offers both and explain why. English learners can use the frames "___ is a good because..." and "___ is a service because..."

Quick check: say "a dentist cleaning your teeth" and ask a student whether it is a good or a service and why.
