Greek and Latin roots word web: a 25-minute 4th grade vocabulary activity
What it is: a 4th grade vocabulary activity where students build a word web around one Greek or Latin root (port, graph, tele, struct, spect) and use the root's meaning to figure out words they have never seen.
Time: about 25 minutes. Grade: 4th grade.
Materials: large paper per group, root cards with the meaning on the back, markers, and dictionaries.
- Write "port" and its meaning, to carry. Ask students for words with port in them: transport, portable, import.
- Show how the meaning shows up in each word: a portable speaker can be carried.
- Each group gets a root and builds a web: the root in the center, words on the branches, and a meaning for each.
- Groups add one unfamiliar word from the dictionary and explain how the root helps.
- Gallery walk: each group reads another web and writes one new word on it.
Differentiation: students who need support get a word list to sort onto the web. Students who are ready combine two roots: telegraph, autograph. English learners can connect roots to cognates in their home language, such as transportar in Spanish.
Quick check: write "spectator" and ask a student which root it has and what it might mean.
