Grocery list writing center: a 20-minute kindergarten writing activity
What it is: a pretend-play writing center where kindergarten students plan a meal, write a grocery list and then "shop" the classroom store, checking items off. Lists are short and real, which makes them perfect first writing.
Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: kindergarten.
Materials: list paper with lines and small check boxes, pencils, empty clean food boxes and cartons with pictures, a basket, and a few picture cards of foods with their names.
- Show a real grocery list. Ask: "Why do people write lists?"
- Plan a pretend meal together, such as a picnic, and write a 3-item list while stretching each word.
- In pairs, students choose a meal and write a list of 3 to 5 items, using the picture cards for help.
- Pairs shop the store with a basket and check each item off as they find it.
- Pairs read their list to the "cashier," who checks that everything is in the basket.
Differentiation: students who need support draw each item and write the first letter. Students who are ready add a number to each item: "2 apples." English learners can copy names from the picture cards.
Quick check: ask a student to read their list and point to the item in the basket that matches each word.
