Label the classroom: a 20-minute kindergarten writing activity
What it is: a kindergarten writing activity where students write labels for objects around the classroom by stretching out the sounds they hear. The labels stay up, so students reread their own writing all week.
Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: kindergarten.
Materials: sticky notes or index cards with tape, markers, and a short list of objects to label (door, desk, clock, sink, book, chair).
- Pick one object, such as the door. Stretch the word slowly with students: "d... oo... r."
- Write the sounds you hear on a sticky note while students watch, and stick it on the door.
- Pairs choose an object from the list, stretch the word and write the sounds they hear.
- Pairs stick their label on the object and read it to another pair.
- Take a label walk: the class reads every label together. Accept spelling by sounds; add the book spelling underneath later if you like.
Differentiation: students who need support write only the first sound and draw the object. Students who are ready add a describing word: "big door." English learners can add the word in their home language.
Quick check: ask a student to read their label and tell you the first and last sounds.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
