Opinion writing: the best recess game, a 2nd grade writing activity
What it is: a 2nd grade opinion writing activity where students choose the best recess game, give two reasons with a detail for each, and end with a closing sentence. A topic every student knows well keeps the focus on structure.
Time: about 40 minutes. Grade: 2nd grade.
Materials: an opinion planner (opinion, reason 1 with detail, reason 2 with detail, closing), lined paper, and a list of linking words (because, also, another reason, that is why).
- Hold a quick class vote on favorite recess games and tally the results.
- Model your own opinion on the board: "Tag is the best recess game because..."
- Students fill the planner with their opinion and two reasons. Partners ask: "Why?" to push for details.
- Students write a paragraph from the planner, using at least two linking words.
- Partners read their paragraphs aloud and point to each reason.
Differentiation: students who need support write one reason with a sentence frame for each part. Students who are ready add a sentence that answers someone who disagrees. English learners can talk through their plan with a partner before writing.
Quick check: ask a student to highlight their opinion in one color and their reasons in another.
