"I can" class book: a 25-minute kindergarten writing activity
What it is: a kindergarten writing activity where every student writes and illustrates one page that starts with "I can." The pages are bound into a class book that students love to reread, and the repeated start helps new writers.
Time: about 25 minutes. Grade: kindergarten.
Materials: page templates with "I can" printed at the top and lines below, crayons, pencils, a hole punch and yarn or rings for binding.
- Share an "I can" page of your own: "I can ride a bike." Point to each word as you read it.
- Students tell a partner something they can do. Encourage new skills, not only favorite things.
- Students write the rest of the sentence, stretching out the sounds, and draw a picture that matches.
- Meet with students to read their page back to you. Write the conventional spelling lightly under theirs if you like.
- Bind the pages and read the book aloud. Put it in the class library.
Differentiation: students who need support dictate the end of the sentence and trace it. Students who are ready add a second sentence: "I learned it from my sister." English learners can say the sentence with a gesture before writing.
Quick check: ask a student to point to each word of their sentence as they read it.
