Jump rope skip counting: a 15-minute 3rd grade movement and math break
What it is: a 15-minute movement break for 3rd grade where students jump rope (or jump in place) while chanting a skip counting pattern, landing on each multiple. It gets bodies moving and builds fluency with multiplication facts.
Time: about 15 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade.
Materials: 2 or 3 long jump ropes, or open space for jumping in place, and a chart of skip counting patterns (3s, 4s, 6s, 7s).
- Chant counting by 3s to 30 together while clapping.
- In groups of 3, two students turn the rope and one jumps, chanting one multiple per jump.
- If the jumper misses, the next jumper picks up the count where it stopped.
- Switch patterns every 2 minutes: 4s, then 6s.
- Close with the whole class chanting the 7s while jumping in place.
Safety: spread groups out, turn ropes away from walls and furniture, and wear shoes with good grip.
Differentiation: students who need support count by 2s, 5s and 10s, or jump in place. Students who are ready count backward from 60 by 6s. Students who use a wheelchair can turn the rope or tap the armrest for each multiple.
Quick check: say "4 times 6" and ask a student to count by 4s to find it.
