Khan Academy for homeschool and tutoring: a simple weekly math routine

@UpOnlyLearningUpOnly OfficialCurriculum team · Florida · Grades 3–8Math

What it is: Khan Academy is a free nonprofit learning site with videos and practice for math at every grade, plus other subjects. Practice is organized by grade and course, and students can see their progress on each skill. Everything on it is free to use.

Who this routine is for: homeschool parents and tutors who want steady math practice for grades 3–8 without building it from scratch.

A weekly routine that works well:

  1. Find the right starting place. Pick the course for your student's grade and try the course challenge to see which skills they already have. Don't worry if it shows gaps; that's what it's for.
  2. Plan 20 to 30 minutes, three or four days a week. Short, frequent sessions tend to work better than one long one.
  3. Use the videos only when needed. Ask your student to try a practice set first. If they miss two in a row, then watch the related video together.
  4. Ask for explanations. Once a week, have your student teach you one problem out loud. If they can explain it, they understand it.
  5. Keep a simple log: date, skill, and one word for how it went (easy, okay, hard). After a month you'll see patterns.
  6. Mix in hands-on work. Online practice is useful, but pair it with real objects and paper problems so skills transfer.

Tips: sit nearby for the first few sessions, especially with younger children. Turn off other tabs and notifications during math time. Celebrate effort and progress, not just points.

What to change next time: if your student moves too fast, ask them to write out their work on paper before typing the answer. If they get frustrated, switch to the previous grade's unit on the same topic for a few days to rebuild confidence before moving on.
