Landforms with modeling dough: a 40-minute 3rd grade geography activity
What it is: a 3rd grade geography activity where students shape landforms (mountain, valley, plateau, island, peninsula, canyon) from modeling dough on a tray and label each one. Building the shapes with their hands makes the definitions stick.
Time: about 40 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade.
Materials: modeling dough in two colors (one for land, one for water) or blue paper for water, a tray or cardboard base, toothpick flags for labels, and landform definition cards with pictures.
- Show photos of a plateau and a mountain. Ask: "What is the difference?" Point out the flat top.
- Groups read the definition cards and plan where each landform will go on their tray.
- They shape each landform and add water where needed (around an island, on three sides of a peninsula).
- Groups label each landform with a toothpick flag.
- Gallery walk: groups visit other trays and find one landform that was shaped especially well.
Safety: use toothpicks with the tips trimmed by an adult, and wash hands after using the dough.
Differentiation: students who need support make 3 landforms with a picture beside each. Students who are ready add a delta and explain how rivers form one. English learners can match each word card to the shape before labeling.
Quick check: point to a landform on a group's tray and ask a student to name it and give its definition.
