Why cities grow near rivers (Grades 3–5): Pick a river, find 3 cities, list river jobs

What it is: a mini-project for grades 3–5 where students follow one great river on a map, find cities along its banks, and figure out why people have settled near rivers for thousands of years: drinking water, farming, fishing, travel and trade.

Time: about 40 minutes. Grade: 3rd to 5th grade.

Materials: atlases or printed maps, sticky notes, and a choice of rivers with cities to find: the Mississippi (Minneapolis, St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans), the Nile (Khartoum, Cairo), the Danube (Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade) and the Yangtze (Chongqing, Wuhan, Shanghai).

  1. Ask: "If you were choosing a place to build a town long ago, what would you need?" List answers. Circle the ones a river can give.
  2. Pairs choose a river, trace it from its source to its mouth with a finger and name the continent.
  3. They find at least 3 cities on the river and mark each with a sticky note.
  4. For each city, students write one way the river helps: water for crops, a port for boats, fish, power or travel.
  5. Students add one problem rivers can bring, such as floods, and one way people deal with it.
  6. Pairs share a 1-minute "river report" and point to their cities on the class map.

Differentiation: students who need support research one river with the class. Students who are ready compare a river city with a desert city and explain the difference. English learners can use the words source, mouth, bank and port.

Quick check: ask a student to name a river city and give two reasons it grew there.

Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
