Population density activity: crowded or roomy? Grades 3–5
What it is: a quick game for grades 3–5 that shows what population density means: how many people live in a certain amount of space. Students fill taped squares with game pieces or classmates and compare crowded and roomy areas, then read real density numbers for U.S. states.
Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: 3rd to 5th grade.
Materials: masking tape to mark two squares on the floor (one small, one large) or two sheets of paper and counters for a desk version, and access to the U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts page for population per square mile.
- Mark a small square and a large square. Put 4 students (or 4 counters) in each.
- Ask: "Same number of people. Which place feels more crowded?" Introduce the term population density.
- Now put 8 in the small square and 2 in the large one. Compare again.
- Explain how density is figured: number of people divided by the area. The Census Bureau reports it as people per square mile.
- Show the population per square mile for your state and for 2 or 3 other states on QuickFacts. Students order them from most crowded to least crowded.
- Discuss: "How might life be different in a state with high density compared with one with low density?"
Safety: stand, do not push. Anyone who does not want to be close to others can place a counter instead.
Differentiation: students who need support compare with counters only. Students who are ready calculate the density of the classroom (students per 100 square feet). English learners can use crowded, roomy, more and fewer.
Quick check: ask a student which has higher density: 20 people in 2 square miles or 20 people in 10 square miles.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
