Language family tree: how Spanish, Portuguese and English are related
What it is: an activity for grades 6–8 where students compare the same words in several European languages, group the languages into families and map where they are spoken today. They discover that Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and Romanian grew from Latin (Romance languages), that English belongs with German and Dutch (Germanic languages), and that both families are branches of the larger Indo-European family.
Time: about 35 minutes. Grade: 6th to 8th grade.
Materials: word cards for "night" in 8 languages (Spanish noche, Portuguese noite, French nuit, Italian notte, Romanian noapte, English night, German Nacht, Dutch nacht), a world map and two colors of yarn or markers.
- Hand out the word cards with the language names hidden. Students sort them into groups that look and sound alike.
- Reveal the language names and the two families: Romance (from Latin) and Germanic.
- Students add a second word, such as "mother" or "water," from a reliable dictionary to test whether the groups still hold.
- On the world map, students color where each language is spoken today, including Spanish and Portuguese in the Americas. Discuss how history, including colonization, spread these languages.
- Point out that many languages belong to other families, such as Quechua, Guaraní and Basque, and that some, like Basque, have no known relatives.
- Students draw a simple family tree from Indo-European to the 8 languages.
Differentiation: students who need support sort 4 cards. Students who are ready add a language from another family and explain why it does not fit. English learners can add the word from their home language and place it on the tree.
Quick check: ask a student why Spanish and Portuguese words often look alike.
