Life cycle wheel: a 35-minute 3rd grade life science activity
What it is: a 3rd grade life science activity where students make a spinning paper wheel that shows the life cycle of an animal, such as a frog or a butterfly, then compare it with another animal's life cycle. Students see that all living things are born, grow, reproduce and die, in different ways.
Time: about 35 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade.
Materials: two paper plates per student (one divided into 4 sections, one with a window cut out by an adult), a paper fastener, crayons, and short readings on frog, butterfly, chicken and bean plant life cycles.
- Ask: "What do a frog and a chicken have in common as they grow?" List ideas.
- Students read about one life cycle and list its 4 stages in order.
- They draw one stage in each section of the bottom plate.
- An adult attaches the top plate with the fastener. Students spin it to show each stage in order.
- Pairs with different animals compare wheels and fill a Venn diagram.
Safety: an adult cuts the windows and inserts the fasteners.
Differentiation: students who need support use a wheel with the stage names printed. Students who are ready add an animal with incomplete metamorphosis, such as a grasshopper. English learners can label each stage with a word and an arrow.
Quick check: spin a student's wheel to one stage and ask what comes before and after it.
