Magic e word wands: a 15-minute 1st grade phonics activity
What it is: a 1st grade phonics activity where students read a short-vowel word, add a silent e with a paper wand, and read the new long-vowel word: cap becomes cape, kit becomes kite. Students see how one letter changes the vowel sound.
Time: about 15 minutes. Grade: 1st grade.
Materials: a paper wand per student with a large e at the tip, word cards that can take a silent e (cap, kit, hop, cub, tap, pin, not, tub), and a pocket chart.
- Read "cap" together. Then hold the e wand at the end and read "cape." Ask: "What changed?"
- Explain that the e is silent but makes the vowel say its name.
- Students take turns: read the card, add the wand, read the new word, and use it in a sentence.
- Sort the pairs on the pocket chart by vowel: a, i, o, u.
- Read a short silly sentence together: "The cub got in the tube."
Differentiation: students who need support work only with a and i words. Students who are ready read words without the wand and decide if a silent e is there. English learners can match each word to a picture.
Quick check: show "hop" and "hope" and ask a student to read both and say which vowel sound changed.
