Moon watch journal: a 1st grade space science activity
What it is: a 1st grade space science activity where students observe the Moon at home for two weeks, draw its shape each night in a journal, and then look for a pattern as a class. Students learn that the Moon's shape seems to change in a pattern.
Time: about 15 minutes. Grade: 1st grade.
Materials: a simple journal with 14 circles (one per night) sent home, a class chart with the same circles, and a short note to families explaining the activity.
- Ask: "Does the Moon always look the same?" Collect ideas and drawings.
- Show the journal. Each night, with a family member, students look at the Moon and shade the dark part of the circle.
- If the Moon is hidden or it's cloudy, students write "cloudy" and skip it.
- Each morning, two students share their drawing, and you add it to the class chart.
- After two weeks, ask: "What pattern do you see? Is the lit part growing or shrinking?"
Safety: students look at the Moon with a family member, not alone outside at night, and never look at the Sun.
Differentiation: students who need support draw 1 night out of 2. Students who are ready learn the words full moon, half moon and crescent. English learners can share their drawing without words.
Quick check: show two drawings from the chart and ask a student which one came first and why.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
