Our families' flags: a 20-minute preschool culture activity
What it is: a preschool social studies activity where the class learns about the countries connected to students' families. Students find each place on a globe, color its flag and share one thing their family enjoys from there, such as a food, a song or a word.
Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: Pre-K (ages 4 to 5).
Materials: a globe or world map, flag outlines printed on paper, crayons, and a short note sent home a few days before asking families which country or place they would like their student to share (optional).
- Show the globe and explain that families in our class come from many places, near and far.
- Read the places families shared. Find each one on the globe and put a sticky note on it.
- Show a picture of each flag. Students describe colors and shapes: "It has stripes. It has a star."
- Each student colors one flag: their family's, or one they would like to learn about.
- Students share one thing: "In Brazil my family likes to..." or "In my family we say..."
- Hang the flags around the globe with a title the class chooses.
Safety: make sharing optional. Some families come from more than one place, some prefer not to share, and our own town or state is always a fine choice.
Differentiation: students who need support can point to colors while you name them. Students who are ready can count the stripes or stars. English learners can teach the class one word from their home language.
Quick check: point to two flags on the wall and ask a student to name one color in each and one thing the class learned.
