Partner reading coach cards: a 20-minute 1st grade fluency routine
What it is: a 1st grade partner reading routine where one student reads and the other acts as a coach, using small cards with helpful prompts instead of just telling the word. Both partners practice reading strategies and kind feedback.
Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: 1st grade.
Materials: a just-right book for each pair, and 3 coach cards per pair: "Look at the picture," "Get your mouth ready for the first sound," "Does that make sense?"
- Model with a student. You read and make a mistake on purpose. The student holds up a coach card.
- Teach the coach rule: wait 3 seconds before helping, then pick a card.
- Pairs sit side by side with the book between them. The reader reads one page.
- The coach gives one compliment: "You went back and fixed a word."
- Switch roles each page. After 10 minutes, pairs share which card helped most.
Differentiation: students who need support read with an adult coach first. Students who are ready can add a card: "Read it again with expression." English learners can coach using the picture card.
Quick check: listen to one pair for a page and note whether the coach waits before helping.
