Quote, explain, connect: citing text evidence in 5th grade
What it is: a 5th grade reading activity that teaches a three-step way to answer questions with text evidence: quote the exact words, explain what they show in your own words, and connect them back to the question.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 5th grade.
Materials: a short story or article, a question that needs evidence ("How does the main character change?"), and a 3-part answer frame.
- Show a weak answer with no evidence and a strong one with quote, explanation and connection. Ask which convinces more.
- Teach quoting: use quotation marks and the page or paragraph number.
- Model explaining: "This shows that..." and connecting: "This answers the question because..."
- Pairs answer two questions using the 3-part frame.
- Pairs swap answers and check each part with a different color pencil.
Differentiation: students who need support pick a quote from 3 choices before explaining it. Students who are ready use two quotes and explain how they work together. English learners can use the frames "The text says...", "This shows...", "This connects to..."
Quick check: ask a student to read one quote from their answer and explain it without reading their own explanation.
