Read the room: a 15-minute kindergarten literacy center
What it is: a kindergarten literacy center where students walk the classroom with a clipboard, find words on the walls and read or copy them. It gives students a reason to read the print around them.
Time: about 15 minutes. Grade: kindergarten.
Materials: clipboards, a recording sheet with 6 boxes, pencils, and words posted around the room (the word wall, labels, a poem chart, name cards).
- Model with a clipboard. Walk to the word wall, read a word aloud and copy it in a box.
- Explain the rules: walk, use a soft voice and read every word you write.
- Students read the room for 8 to 10 minutes. Give a focus if you like: words that start with s, or words with 3 letters.
- Partners swap sheets and read each other's words.
- Students circle the word they are proudest to read and share it.
Differentiation: students who need support find letters from their name instead of whole words. Students who are ready write a sentence with two of their words. English learners can draw a picture next to each word.
Quick check: point to one word on a student's sheet and ask them to read it and show where they found it.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
