Reader's theater in 30 minutes: a 2nd grade fluency activity
What it is: a 2nd grade fluency activity where small groups read a short script aloud, each student reading one character's lines with expression. There are no costumes or memorizing, just reading the same text several times with a reason to sound good.
Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 2nd grade.
Materials: a short script (1 to 2 pages) for 4 or 5 readers per group, highlighters, and a quiet corner for each group.
- Read a few lines aloud twice: once in a flat voice and once with expression. Ask which was better and why.
- Give groups their scripts. Each student highlights their own lines.
- Groups read the script through 3 times, swapping parts if they like.
- Walk around and coach: "How would this character sound if they were scared?"
- Each group performs for the class. The audience names one reader who used great expression.
Differentiation: students who need support get a part with fewer, shorter lines and practice it with you first. Students who are ready can write one new line for their character. English learners can echo-read their lines with a partner before the group practice.
Quick check: listen to one student read a line twice and note whether their pace and expression improved.
