Small moment writing: zoom in on one minute, a 2nd grade narrative activity
What it is: a 2nd grade narrative writing activity where students choose one small moment, such as the first bite of an ice pop, instead of a whole day, and stretch it out with actions, feelings and what they heard and saw.
Time: about 35 minutes. Grade: 2nd grade.
Materials: a paper "zoom lens" (a cardboard frame), a model story, a 3-box planner (beginning, middle, end of the moment), and lined paper.
- Read two versions of your story: "I went to the beach. It was fun." and a slow version of one moment on the beach. Ask which is more interesting.
- Hold up the zoom lens. Explain: writers zoom in on one small moment.
- Students list 3 small moments, pick one and plan it in the 3 boxes.
- They write the moment, adding at least one action, one feeling and one sound or sight.
- Partners read and find one spot where the writer could zoom in even more.
Differentiation: students who need support draw the 3 boxes first and write one sentence for each. Students who are ready add dialogue. English learners can tell the moment aloud to a partner, then write.
Quick check: ask a student to point to the sentence in their story with the strongest detail.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
