Somebody wanted but so then: a 25-minute 5th grade summarizing activity
What it is: a 5th grade summarizing activity that uses five words, Somebody, Wanted, But, So and Then, to turn a whole story or chapter into a short, focused summary. Students learn to leave out small details and keep what matters.
Time: about 25 minutes. Grade: 5th grade.
Materials: a short story or chapter the class has read, a 5-row organizer, and a few well-known stories for practice.
- Model with a well-known story: "Somebody (Cinderella) wanted (to go to the ball) but (her stepmother said no), so (her fairy godmother helped), then (she met the prince and lost her slipper)."
- Practice one together with a story the class knows.
- Pairs complete the organizer for the class story or chapter.
- Pairs join the five parts into a 2 or 3 sentence summary.
- Compare summaries: "Which details did pairs keep? Which did they leave out, and why?"
Differentiation: students who need support complete the organizer with picture clues. Students who are ready write two versions from two characters' points of view. English learners can use the five words as sentence starters.
Quick check: ask a student to summarize yesterday's chapter using the five words.
