Story starter swap: a 40-minute 5th grade narrative writing activity
What it is: a 5th grade narrative writing activity where each student writes a strong opening paragraph, passes it to a classmate who writes the middle, and gets it back to write the ending. Students practice hooks, pacing and keeping a story consistent.
Time: about 40 minutes. Grade: 5th grade.
Materials: lined paper, a list of opening hooks (start with dialogue, an action, a question or a sound), and a timer.
- Read 3 opening lines from published books and ask which made students want to keep reading.
- Students write an opening paragraph in 8 minutes: a character, a setting and a hook.
- Swap. The next writer reads carefully and writes the middle in 10 minutes, adding a problem that fits the opening.
- Swap back. The first writer reads the middle and writes the ending in 10 minutes.
- Pairs read the whole story together and mark one place where the story felt consistent and one where it shifted.
Differentiation: students who need support get a starter sentence to continue. Students who are ready add a twist in the middle that the original writer must resolve. English learners can plan their part with a quick sketch before writing.
Quick check: ask a student to point to the hook in their opening and explain what kind it is.
