Transition word relay: a 25-minute 3rd grade writing activity
What it is: a 3rd grade writing relay where teams build a story one sentence at a time, and each sentence must start with a transition word drawn from a pile (first, next, suddenly, after that, finally). Students hear how transitions move a story along.
Time: about 25 minutes. Grade: 3rd grade.
Materials: transition word cards for each team, a story starter strip per team ("One windy morning, Maya found a map in her backyard."), and chart paper and a marker per team.
- Read a short paragraph with no transitions, then the same paragraph with them. Ask which is easier to follow.
- Teams stand in a line facing their chart paper, with the starter sentence already written.
- The first student draws a transition card, writes a sentence starting with it, and passes the marker.
- Continue for 6 to 8 sentences. The last student must use an ending transition: finally or in the end.
- Each team reads its story aloud. The class notices which transitions made the story clearer.
Safety: walk, don't run, between the line and the chart paper.
Differentiation: students who need support get a partner for their turn and a short list of sentence ideas. Students who are ready use cause-and-effect transitions such as because of this. English learners can say their sentence aloud to a teammate before writing.
Quick check: show a sentence pair and ask a student to choose the best transition to join them.
