Text structure sort (Grade 4): Read the paragraph, spot the signal words, match the organizer

What it is: a 4th grade nonfiction reading activity where students read short paragraphs and sort them by text structure (sequence, compare and contrast, cause and effect, problem and solution, description), using signal words and matching graphic organizers.

Time: about 30 minutes. Grade: 4th grade.

Materials: 10 short paragraph cards on one topic (for example volcanoes), five organizer cards (a timeline, a Venn diagram, arrows, a problem box with a solution box, a web), and a signal word list.

  1. Read a cause and effect paragraph aloud and ask: "How is this organized?" Point out signal words such as because and as a result.
  2. Show the five organizers and the signal words for each.
  3. Pairs read each card, underline signal words and match the card to an organizer.
  4. Each pair fills one organizer completely from one of its paragraphs.
  5. Discuss: "Why would an author pick cause and effect for this topic?"

Differentiation: students who need support start with three structures: sequence, compare and contrast, and cause and effect. Students who are ready find a structure in a science textbook chapter. English learners can sort signal words before the paragraphs.

Quick check: read a new paragraph and ask a student to name its structure and one signal word.
