Water painting lines: an outdoor pre-writing activity for preschool
What it is: an outdoor pre-writing activity where students paint straight, curved and zigzag lines on a wall, fence or sidewalk with plain water and a brush. Big arm movements build the control students need for writing letters later.
Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: Pre-K (ages 4 to 5).
Materials: a cup of water and a wide paintbrush per student, and a wall, fence or sidewalk outside. Chalk is optional for drawing guide lines.
- Outside, show the four lines you will paint today: down, across, a curve like a rainbow and a zigzag.
- Students paint a long line from top to bottom while saying "top to bottom."
- Next paint across, left to right, saying "start on this side."
- Paint curves and zigzags. If you drew chalk guides, students paint on top of them.
- Stop and watch: "What is happening to our lines?" Talk about the sun and air drying the water.
- Students paint their first initial before the lines disappear.
Safety: use plain water only, stay in a fenced or supervised area, and choose a shady spot on very hot days.
Differentiation: students who need support can paint with hand-over-hand help or use a sponge. Students who are ready can paint the letters of their name. Students who use a wheelchair can paint on a low board or a table.
Quick check: ask students to paint one line you name: down, across, curve or zigzag.
Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
