Write a news article: the inverted pyramid for 5th grade

@UpOnlyLearningUpOnly OfficialCurriculum team · Florida · Grades 3–5Writing
News article: inverted pyramid (Grade 5): Who, what, when, where, details next, short headline

What it is: a 5th grade informational writing activity where students report a real school event (a field trip, a club meeting, a science fair) as a news article using the inverted pyramid: the most important facts first, then details, then background.

Time: about 45 minutes. Grade: 5th grade.

Materials: 2 or 3 short news articles written for students, an inverted pyramid organizer, interview question cards, and lined paper.

  1. Read a short news article aloud. Ask: "What did you learn from the first sentence alone?"
  2. Draw the inverted pyramid: who, what, when, where and why at the top; details and quotes in the middle; background at the bottom.
  3. Students pick a recent school event and interview a classmate or adult who was there, writing down one exact quote.
  4. They plan with the pyramid and write a lead sentence that answers at least 4 of the 5 Ws.
  5. Students write the article, add a headline of 8 words or fewer, and trade with a partner to check facts and the quote.

Differentiation: students who need support write the lead and two detail sentences with frames. Students who are ready add a photo caption and a second quote. English learners can plan with the 5 W question cards.

Quick check: ask a student to read their lead sentence and point to the who, what, when and where.

Save this activity to your library so it is ready when you need it.
