2D shapes with craft sticks: a 20-minute kindergarten geometry activity
What it is: a kindergarten geometry activity where students build triangles, squares, rectangles and other flat shapes from craft sticks and count the sides and corners. Building shapes helps students describe them, not just name them.
Time: about 20 minutes. Grade: kindergarten.
Materials: a pile of craft sticks per pair (about 12), a few long sticks or strips of paper for rectangles, and a shape poster.
- Hold up 3 sticks. Ask: "Can we make a closed shape with these?" Build a triangle together and count the sides and corners.
- Pairs build a square. Ask: "How many sticks did you need? Are all the sides the same?"
- Give each pair 2 long and 2 short pieces. They build a rectangle and compare it to the square.
- Challenge: "Make a shape with 5 sides. What is it called?" Introduce the word pentagon.
- Pairs choose one shape to show the class and say: "It has ___ sides and ___ corners."
Differentiation: students who need support build only triangles and squares. Students who are ready build a hexagon and a shape that is not closed, and explain why it is not a shape. English learners can point to sides and corners as they count.
Quick check: show a picture of a rectangle. Ask a student how many sticks they would need and why.
